Out With The Old

I don’t think we have covered it much yet but we have two interesting bathrooms. The guest bath, upstairs, is small but functional… Now. It didn’t have a toilet when we moved in. The new toilet was in the hallway awaiting installation. It had been removed because the faucet for the tub dripped and needed replacing. Doing so meant removing the toilet to provide access to the crawl space (I use that term loosely) to access the plumbing.

This isn’t the story of that bathroom so I’ll just say we fixed it when we needed a working toilet in the house. That was a long Saturday.

This is the story of the master bath. I know the term brings to mind certain expectations. Those aren’t fulfilled in our case. The entire room, including tub, sink and stool is 5-1/2′ x 6′.  To boot, the ceiling slopes from maybe seven feet to five and a half at the outside of the tub/shower. We have plans for enlarging this but those are a while away.

I had to cut an access hole in the floor in order to replace an old cast iron fitting when we had our first issue. We were planning on the expansion at that time so we did the minimum to get things flowing again. Now, with the addition looking farther away we decided to do a bit of an upgrade, new sink, new floor, paint and some electrical work.

Last week, hell it may have been the week before, I lose track, I once again opened up the floor so I could replace the rest of the old cast iron with new PVC so everything will flow quickly and smoothly for a long time.

Here is a shot of most of the “old”. It’s hard to get a shot of all of it because it’s in a shallow crawl space under the floor. Below is dirt, rocks, snake skins, and spiders.

That’s a 6′ long snake skin. It was one of the TWO I found down there. Also, my access hole.

Well, everything is out now. Here is the carnage.

And here is the new, or as much as I can get a shot of. And it doesn’t leak!

Now on to sealing up the snake and spider pit, electrical, drywall, flooring, paint, and fixture installation. If I remember to get more before and after pictures I’ll post updates as we get things done.

  1. That’s some good-looking PVC work. Mine always has purple primer and glue drips all over it.
