Good Critters

Figured all our critter posts focused on snakes and squirrels were doing a disservice to the amazing array of beautiful and welcome critters here on the farm.

Take, for instance, my encounter with a pair of butterflies apparently dancing in the dog yard the other day.  One black and one classic monarch yellow, the two danced one above the other for several minutes, eventually flying so low as to be well within Trixie chomping range. Yet even she seemed mesmerized by their peaceful circling, leaving them to enjoy their exchange.

The butterflies have come to visit the Mimosa trees which surround our backyard. Apparently we are quite fortunate to have so many that are healthy after a blight nearly eliminated them from Virginia last decade.

My first reaction when I saw the dance was, oh my goodness, I need to get my video camera. Then I paused and remembered a butterfly dance was a gift to be enjoyed rather than missed in an vain attempt to grab my camera and capture the moment.

So please excuse the lack of videography and somewhat blurry photographs and instead let your imagination take you to our beautiful yard and be swept away with the peace and joy of two butterflies dancing.

  1. Had some time to catch up on the happenings at the farm! Wow, what an amazing adventure. Best of luck and enjoy the peacefulness. Once you get used to it, it’s really hard to go back to an urban environment for more than a few days at a time.
